Rock Climbing in the Gunks

Experience a day of scaling the rock walls of the famous Shawangunk Ridge in the Mohonk Preserve

Experience a day of scaling the rock walls of the famous Shawangunk Ridge in the Mohonk Preserve.  Known as the ‘Gunks, it is the absolute mecca for east coast climbers of all abilities – beginners to experienced climbers alike.

This trip is a definite must-do for anyone wanting to give the sport of climbing a try or for those looking to sharpen their knowledge and skill on the famed rock.  Never climbed before and wonder if this type of adventure is for you?  Well, our experienced instructors work with first timers everyday and they always go away smiling and with a sense of achievement.  For rock climbing, simply put, this is the place to be and the instructors to do it with….with an extra bonus of getting to enjoy the beautiful fall foliage.

Your experience will start by meeting our climbing instructors for the day.  All instructors are licensed and certified by the State of New York and the American Mountain Guide Association.  They will introduce you to all the fundamental skills that climbers need to know.  We will learn about the equipment and its correct use, safety rules and checks, common climbing terminology and commands, typical knots, climbing techniques, belaying skills and rappelling.  Then we will climb, climb and climb to our hearts content....and do some rappelling too.  There will be various ropes and routes set up with varying degrees of difficulty to test our mettle.  Make sure you take a moment to enjoy the views, take in the fall colors and take in the fresh air from “up high”.  This picturesque location has awe inspiring scenery with unparalleled views from the white colored quartz cliffs to the Hudson Valley farmland below.  After our climbing session, we will survey some of the trails and carriageways that make this unique area so special - miles of both easy going carriageways and rugged foot paths eagerly await for us to explore.
