Hiking Wine in Black Rock Forest

Black rock forest hike in the hudson highlands

Black Rock Forest is a little known 3,800 acre park in the Hudson Highlands adjacent to the Hudson River and Storm King State Park.  The park has a variety of hiking trails and woods roads that meander through the park – roughly 30 miles in total.

We will be traveling on a combination of these trails and woods roads for today’s adventure.  The trails, with some short but challenging ups and downs, lead to panoramic ridgeline overlooks and travel besides bubbling mountain streams, while the rambling woods roads weave around the hilltops and alongside pristine reservoirs.

The history of Black Rock dates back to the American Revolution.  George Washington’s army used Continental Road, which cuts through the middle of the park, as a direct route from West Point to points north along the Hudson.  From the 1,460 foot Spy Rock, sentinels from Washington’s camp kept close tabs on the British vessels sailing up the river from the south.  Another point of interest is the Chatfield Stone House circa 1830’s – the oldest building in the forest.

Today, Black Rock Forest serves as a field station for scientific forest research and outdoor education programs as it has for the past 75 years.  Midway through our hike we will enjoy our picnic lunch at one of the many scenic overlooks or reservoirs, then afterward, we will load-up and head to the vineyard for some wine tasting, socializing, and relaxation.

All trip details and final trip itinerary will be e-mailed to all registered guests the week prior to the trip date.
