Bearfort Mtn Ridge Hike Wine
Bearfort Mountain is a glacially carved ridge that offers spectacular views from high above 7-mile long Greenwood Lake and is also one of the most picturesque ridges in all of NJ – a longtime favorite destination of hikers since the 1930’s.
The Bearfort Mountain ridge located in Abram S. Hewitt State Forest adjacent to the NY-NJ state border lies immediately west of Greenwood Lake and claims host to many overlooks, colorful glaciated rock, and stunted pitch-pines. This scenic park is practically isolated and untouched and accessible only on foot. It also contains two quaint and placid mountain lakes – Surprise Lake and West Pond – situated up high along the mountain ridge. Today’s hike will offer a gradual climb up to the ridge with the reward being one of the best views around. The pinnacle characteristic of this park is this panoramic overlook some 700 ft above Greenwood Lake – virtually the entire lake can be seen from this vantage point. The forest is named for Abram Hewitt who, in the mid 1850’s owned this land and the nearby Ringwood Ironworks which was known for producing gun-barrel iron for the Union Army during the civil war.
After our hike, we will make our way to a local winery and distillery for some wine tasting, socializing, and relaxation. We will be treated to live entertainment and, if you choose, you may visit their gourmet café and treat yourself to one of their culinary delights.
