FAQs
Our trips are designed for the everyday, moderately active person. If you found our website and are reading this, then you are probably just the type of person that would love our trips. We do not rush, push or have a pre-set pace that you must adhere to. While most of our trips do pose some sort of physically challenging aspect, we do allow plenty of time to stop and smell the roses. For additional information look for the “difficulty rating” on the details page of each trip. Still not sure, contact us.
Click on trip schedule to find the schedule of upcoming trips. Next, click on a particular trip of your choice to see all the details pertaining to the trip.
Our trips are all inclusive so you shouldn’t have to bring anything except maybe some extra snacks and some water. All trips include transportation, tolls and gas, permits and fees, equipment rentals, continental breakfast and gourmet picnic lunch unless otherwise noted.
Along with an overall rating (easy, moderate, intermediate, or strenuous), we list details such as duration of trip, mileage, terrain type and elevation changes on the details page for each trip. Almost all our trips are do-able for the average, moderately active person unless otherwise noted.
You must reserve your spot in advance by using our website and paying thru Paypal. Under the description and details of each trip, you will find the “Book This Trip”. Make your selection and you’ll be on your way. You will receive an e-mail to confirm your reservation. It’s best to reserve at least three weeks prior to ensure availability. Of course, we will take reservations up to the day before if the trip is not completely booked. If you prefer, you can make a reservation by mail - print, fill out, and mail in our form along with your check – please allow for an appropriate amount of time for us to receive your mailed payment.
You may have missed the boat, but many times there are last minute cancellations so you never know. If a trip is listed as Full you can click on the "wait list" link to get on the wait list. We will contact you about availability and also this will allow us to notify you of the next time this particular trip will be scheduled.
Wear whatever is comfortable. It is recommended to have a sturdy pair of broken-in trail shoes, boots, or sneakers. It is preferable to dress in layers and wear clothing that will wick away perspiration and keep you dry and comfortable (i.e. polypro, coolmax, spandex/lycra, etc). Any additional suggestions or necessities (if any) would be listed on the details page for each trip.
Not much, remember our trips are all inclusive. We do suggest you bring appropriate clothing to fit the season and a day pack to carry extra snacks and water. Any additional items that you should bring (if any) will be listed on the details page for each trip
We will depart from NYC – location and time will be identified on the details page of each trip. We can occasionally accommodate other pick-up locations in NYC and NJ – You can contact us about other locations.
Absolutely you can, even if the trip is completely booked. When you sign-up for a trip, choose the “drive yourself” option when paying with Paypal. This option offers a substantial discount yet you will receive all the same services, equipment, lunch, etc. The venue location, directions and time for you to meet-up with the rest of the group will be sent out via e-mail in our "trip itinerary" that we send out to all registered guests the week of the scheduled trip.
We understand that sometimes “stuff happens”, so we will try to accommodate your needs. Generally speaking, if you cancel a reservation more than 2 weeks before the trip date, you get a 100% credit toward a future trip of your choice. If you cancel more than 7 days before the trip date, you get a 50% credit. Unfortunately, cancellations with less than 7 days notice receive no credit – however we will strive to make reasonable reparations for hiking only trips since equipment, etc., does not need to be reserved. If you are a "no show" or arrive late and miss the van then unfortunately you do not get a refund or credit.
A forecast of light or moderate rain will not cancel a trip. Actually, contrary to what you may think, a little adverse weather can show you things you wouldn’t normally see on a sunny day… and most likely we will have the park to ourselves. O.C would cancel a trip if there is a forecast of severe weather (heavy rain, etc) that we believe would compromise the quality and safety of the trip. You will be notified of a cancellation at least 12 hours before the scheduled departure time. If we cancel a trip, you get a 100% credit toward a future trip of your choice. Any other cancellations made by O.C. due to unfavorable conditions (i.e. low water levels for a rafting trip or patchy snow conditions for a ski/snowshoe trip) would result in a 100% credit toward a future trip of your choice.
